The Brick Bestiary: The Ultimate LEGO Animal Archive

The Brick Bestiary: The Ultimate LEGO Animal Archive
Welcome to the jungle!

My first article on LEGO animal figures dates back to 2019. I was the editor of a LEGO blog at the time, and I wrote it for them. When Buka Bricks started in 2020, it was one of the first articles I translated and published here. Of course, I added the animals released since then.

In 2022, I started a new project. To know which animals I owned, I decided to create my own catalog. Since I was photographing them, I decided to write about them as well. At the time, I owned 265 different animals.

Right now that number is 553. I have almost doubled my collection in three years. I think the number of LEGO animal figures will surpass the number of minifigures very soon.

As I was updating the blog, I realized the animal series that started with “only the ones I have” evolved into “all the animals in that category”. I loved writing about them, and the more I loved it the more I wrote.

So now you have a huge LEGO animal archive in front of you. Every animal ever released, including images of different colors, prints, and lots of information. With comparison pictures of old and new, big and small. A little criticism, a little praise (okay, a lot of praise :) ), and full of fun.

If an animal is announced officially and has an image, you’ll most likely to find information about it here. As long as the LEGO Group produces new animals, I will update all my animal articles. My categorization is different than Bricklink’s, so I added a list below to show which animal is in which article.

I visited so many pages while writing these. While I came across a few based only on animals, I never came across anything as extensive as the ones here. Animals were always “mentioned”, but never the highlights. They are my blog’s unique feature.

Sorry-not-sorry for being so smug. I put in a lot of work for these articles, and I’m really proud of them.

I learned a lot while writing and loved every minute. I hope you love reading them, too.

List of animal articles

Bonus

  • LEGO 10975 Wild Animals of the World: Elephant, giraffe, zebra, lion, bear, panda, deer, llama (alpaca), monkey, alligator (crocodile), horse, turtle, tortoise, raccoon, squirrel, salamander, toucan, unspecified bird, penguin, Triceratops and Pteranodon figures.

Notes

  • If the above-mentioned animals have cubs, they’re next to their parents.
  • DUPLO animals are also in their respective category.
  • Special characters, such as animals from animations or movies, can be found in their respective pages if a real-life version exists. Meaning the cat from The Simpsons is in cats, Sebastian from The Little Mermaid is in water animals. If there’s no real-life version, they are in fantastic creatures, like the Hippogriff from Harry Potter.
  • Some articles say which animal appeared in how many sets. That was up-to-date when the article was first published, it may not have been updated later. It means they appeared a minimum of that number, but there’s a chance they were released in later sets.
  • The 2025 update adds a handy parts list at the end of each article. While it includes all the animals featured, it doesn’t assign specific part numbers to individual figures – you get the full treasure chest, not a labeled map.
  • Please don’t take the information provided as 100% right. I don’t have most of the animals I wrote about, so my research is based on the pages on the web. Although I use trusted sources, the information on their colors, sizes, moulds and similar details may not always be true. I’m only human :) Also, did I mention there are over 1300 animals? True story.

I have gone through many, many pages to place good images in these articles. While each post has its own credits, I want to especially thank BrickLink, Brickset, New Elementary, The Brothers Brick and Jay’s Brick Blog for providing images of and information on newly released or yet to be released animals. They have helped me more than they could ever know (and of course, will continue to do so :) ).

And now, without further ado… the animals await.

Some girls play with Barbie dolls, while others create small worlds with LEGO minifigures and continue to do so when they grow up. You can probably guess which group I belong to :)
