A Few Thoughts on LEGO Flowers

The Turkish version of this article talks about an alternate brand which is most probably only sold in Turkey. Although there are lots of alternate brands like this one, some even having sets similar to this one, writing it in English seemed meaningless. I mean, would you read about a brand if you would never be able to purchase it? Yeah, me neither. So, I decided to write about something else.

I wanted to write about flowers, since its counterpart is about them, but I couldn’t, for the life of me, figure out what to say. I love the LEGO Botanical Collection. There. Article finished. As I was looking around, I saw this amazing headline in the NY Times: Stop murdering houseplants. Try LEGO flowers instead.

I couldn’t help smiling. They were talking about me, and people like me. Both my grandmothers were green thumbs, and so was everyone on my mother’s side. I, however, was a whole different case. I couldn’t even keep a cactus alive. It was one of the things I hated most about myself. And after a while, there were always cats around, so keeping plants in the house was never an option. When the LEGO plant sets were announced, I was so happy. I didn’t have to feel bad when they died anymore!

Even though I got the first roses when they were released, that became the extent of my botanical purchase history for a long while.

I got the Tiny Plants set “for my dad” last year and learned the meaning of watching someone build a set in slow motion. Still, it was a wonderful experience, since it was his first ever LEGO set.

I loved the Botanical Collection, but they were never my priority. I’m not ashamed to say they still aren’t. I’d rather buy a Friends set for the animals or a Star Wars set for the minifigures. When your budget is limited, and when the company releases so many beautiful sets, you need to choose, as I’m sure is the case with every AFOL. However, when I had an increased budget, I did get the sets I wanted. Well, set, so far. I only got the Plum Blossom set like this, but I have my eyes on the Wildflower Bouquet as well. Its vibrant colors just call to me. This year’s Pretty Pink Bouquet is nice, too, but a bit too pink for my taste. Still, they may look good if displayed together.

I was surprised when my boyfriend took me to the LEGO store a few days ago. He got me out of the house by saying “Let’s grab a cup of coffee”, and it was the last place I expected him to go. He’s not into LEGO, and me obsessing over it doesn’t help the situation. I was even more surprised when I realized he was expecting me to pick something for Valentine’s Day. I tried to get out of it (I have my reasons :P ) but the guys (employees) managed to lure me in. So, I got the Cherry Blossoms; “Sakura”, which had meaning for him, as well. He was going towards Gotham City when he learned I was going to get it one day, but I did manage to prevent that. It wasn’t its time yet.

I squeezed in another flower before the end of the day, this time from an alternate brand. I had no idea which flower it was, but it’s been calling me since the first time I saw it. Apparently, it was a delphinium Learning that had no effect on me at all, it was just a pretty flower. Building it was easy – maybe not as easy as a LEGO flower, but almost. It created a great contrast to the pink and white cherry blossoms. I added my roses from before, even built the paper bag Field Flowers of this year, and put them all in a vase. I used to buy bouquets of flowers before cats “infested” my life; I loved seeing color when I came home. Now the only danger they’re in is to be knocked down, which I’m more okay with than them being eaten.

Seeing images of new sets, or even writing about them, is never the same as building them yourself. And since I haven’t been getting a lot of sets lately, I’ve been missing a lot. Oh, a new part! Wait, it’s been in production for the last three years. Ooooh, a new technique! Yeah, not so much. It’s good, in a way, because I’m always amazed by the “new” stuff. But it also means I have a lot of catching up to do. Thank goodness for pages like New Elementary for that, for dissecting almost every set, mentioning new moulds, new colors, new prints. I have learned so much because of them. The more I learn, the more I start seeing. Ha! Got one! This flower mould is new! Yess, it’s from 2024! *smirks*

Who knows, maybe one day I’ll start seeing them before anyone talks about them :)

I know this is not a usual blog post. There are a handful of people who reads these in English, so, many thanks to you for reading this today. I wish you a great day, a great week, and a great year, filled with color, filled with flowers, and surrounded by the people you love.

See you in the next one!

All images are mine, except for the flower bouquet sets. I got those from Brickset.

Some girls play with Barbie dolls, while others create small worlds with LEGO minifigures and continue to do so when they grow up. You can probably guess which group I belong to :)
